What is Sapphire?

Sapphire is a variety of the mineral corundum.  It is a precious gemstone.  Sapphire is a 5th and a 45th Anniversary gemstone.

Known as the "wisdom stone", each color of Sapphire brings its own particular wisdom.  It releases mental tension, depression, unwanted thoughts and spiritual confusion.  Sapphire restores balance within the body, aligning the physical, mental and spiritual planes, bringing serenity and peace of mind.  It stimulates concentration, brings lightness, and joy.  Sapphire is also known as a "stone of prosperity", attracting gifts of all kinds and fulfilling dreams and desires.

Sapphire treats blood disorders, combatting excessive bleeding and strengthening the walls of the veins.  It is used for cellular disorders, regulates the glands and calms overactive body systems.

The Blue Sapphire is traditionally associated with purity and love.  It assists you to stay on the spiritual path, releasing blockages and providing strength.  Blue Sapphire facilitates self-expression, assisting in communication and expressing your truth and beliefs.  It opens and heals the thyroid and the throat chakra and has a calming and balancing effect on the nervous system.

Sapphires in Greek Mythology

Sapphires were said to be named after the Greek word of “Sapphirus” which means blue. The bold, vibrant blue hue of the sapphire.

Because of the blue appearance of the sky, many ancient Greeks believed that the sky was a reflection of the giant sapphire in which the world was placed upon. Used as a protective measure, the sapphire was thought  to contain the power of protection from poisoning and envy. Not only was the sapphire able to provide ancient Greeks with protection, but it was said that it was also used as a healing power as well. Thought to harness the power to cure rheumatism, mental illness, colic and even strengthen one’s eyesight, the sapphire was often found in the medical tools of many ancient healers.

Sapphires were also often worn in adornment to connect those to the spirit world. As years passed, sapphires become popular amongst witches and necromancers as they were thought to hold the ability to allow them to see their the “third eye”.

Sapphires in Ancient Egypt Literature

Ancient Egyptians used the Sapphire for healing powers. In the book, The Curious Lore of Precious Stones, George Kunz states that one of the healing methods this gem was used for was to aid in the treatment of diseases of the eyes. It was believed that the astringent properties may have helped these eye conditions in their healing process.

The sapphire of ancient Egypt was originally referenced as the “lapis-lazuli”, but later during medieval times, sapphire was the name given to signify the stunning blue gem.

The Virgo symbol on a strand of sapphires, which compliments many of this zodiac's traits is a meaningful way to represent your values and characteristics. If a design in your desired size sells out, please take advantage of the Email Me When Available feature within the product pages. By expressing interest, not only do you encourage me to source more gemstones to create more stock, but you also help me adequately plan to create the exact amount needed to meet the interest expressed. This prevents me from over or under-buying materials. 

Prices are subject to change without notice, as gemstones in the same, or greater, consistency in cut and quality may not always be obtained at the same price due to several uncontrollable environmental & political factors.
